Union Major General Gordon Granger Arrives in Galveston

On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with a message that would forever change the state's history. General Order No. 3, issued by Granger, officially informed the people of Texas that slavery had been abolished throughout the United States.

This news came as a shock to many in Texas, as the state had been one of the last bastions of slavery in the Confederacy. The order sparked mixed reactions, with some Texans celebrating the end of slavery and others expressing anger and resentment.
